In occasion of Packaging Première, the international fair of luxury packaging, MONOGRID was asked to create an interactive installation for Arjowiggins, worldwide leader in special papers production. The idea was to let people control a video projection modulating the ambiental lighting using the special colors of the event’s papery invitations.
Since we wanted to allow multiple visitors to interact at the same time to create a dynamic chromatic blend, we had to setup multiple linked workstations. The challenge was to combine our requirements with the technical feasibility of the project. Our solution was to create a “virtual” webcam that connects three camera feeds, making them available to the browser, allowing us to merge three webcams in a single web page. Using the color palette of the new collection, we started working on the right chromatic restitution using a web library that integrates OpenCV allowing us to make both color-sampling and color-tracking. We then created four dynamically animated overlying radial gradients, inscripted in a circular projection to achieve a visually stunning look and feel.
The final result was thrilling. Hundreds of people have interacted with the installations during Colours!, the event that animated the Arjowiggins spaces for three days. Suggestive light games were created by the guests using different colored papers, transforming the perception of the surrounding space through chromatic variations, reflections and a modular atmosphere. The challenge was to digitally translate a traditional and inert element as paper, through a dynamic and organic content that celebrates all its peculiarities.
