In order to tease the upcoming new release of Suburra the series, we’ve thought about developing a specific storyline for the game that might collocate itself in between episodes 7 and 8 of the first season. Characters and environments of the Tv show are the same in the game, working as a sort of spin-off. This operation also allowed to communicate in different periods and to make every single platform (film, series, games, merchandise ecc) take advantage from one another.
The main objective for the players along the whole gameplay is to make most advantageous choices while acting as if they were the characters they are playing with. To do this, beside sneaking, searching for clues and useful items, they have to select their own answers among different options and aiming to develop the story according to Suburra’s style. Sharing items and information about the mission is the main key between betrayal and loyalty: maintaining balance is the most remunerable way to play. The sequence of the answers during dialogues are important as they will reinforce the team feelings, building or destroying the relationship between the characters with relevant consequences along the gameplay. Specific assignments have to be also accomplished in each chapter in order to fulfill the game mission. After completing each assignment, players get clues that help them progressing with the next steps of the story. For any chapter, the player can choose to impersonate Spadino, Aureliano or Lele, the main characters of the Netflix series.
The game was developed by using Unity and conceived for being played on the main and most engaging platforms, iOS and Android.
WHAT WE DID
The first thing to do was choosing the style in terms of both visual and text contents for the storytelling and game development. The aim was to get as close as possible to the original Suburra series and relevant mood. The storytelling, the chapters’ structure and the placement of all items and characters have been conceived based on that and the writing of the dialogues as well as the characters’ profiles were meant to remind players of the series and get them involved the same way the do by watching the TV show.
Nerdo studio helped us in customising the look of the environments and characters by choosing the more captivating style for relevant animations. We have then worked with Modo for modeling in 3d all elements and eventually implemented AI, fighting modes, dialogues, options, the inventory, the items exchange, clues and animations.
Additional AR features have been included too by using ARCore and ARkit so that players could immerse themselves in some piece of story during the gameplay. AR was created as a mini game inside the main one, involving players to find clues through environment and NPCs interactions.
By releasing the game and teasing Suburra’s audience to the series’ second season, we created an increasing interest in the whole Suburra's world introducing a new and richer dimension where to meet main characters and get involved in their storylines. Players and audience are also allowed to cross path with the main characters or hear about them as the game progresses, which makes them feel full members of the Suburra crew.
